Originally named Tara Leigh Patrick, Carmen was born on April 20, 1972 in White Oak, Ohio. Her father is Irish and her mother is of German and Cherokee descent. She started attending the School for Creative and Performing Arts when she was nine years old. As a teenager, she performed as a dancer in musicals and did her own choreography. By the time she was a teenager, she was performing in musicals (as a dancer) and doing her own choreographies.

Carmen started her career as a model for Target department stores in Minneapolis. After living there with her sister for four years, she shifted to Los Angeles.
